Columbia U. Senate Backs Probe of Pro-Palestinian Protests

Task Force to Investigate Leadership Response to Demonstrations

NYPD Ordered to Clear Occupied Building, Encampments

Updated 6:58 AM PDT April 30, 2024 | NEW YORK (AP) — Columbia University's senate has voted in favor of a resolution to create a task force to investigate the university leadership's handling of Pro-Palestinian protests on campus.

Dozens of protesters took over a building at Columbia University in New York early Tuesday, barricading the entrances. The activists, who are denouncing Israel's war in Gaza, remain camped out on the university's West Lawn.

On Tuesday, Columbia University asked the New York Police Department to clear the occupied building and encampments. In a letter, the university requested that the NYPD "use all necessary means" to remove the protesters.

In an attempt to de-escalate the situation, Columbia University announced that all classes will be remote on Monday. Tensions on campus have been growing over Israel's war in Gaza.

The senate's resolution calls for the task force to investigate the university leadership's "decision-making and actions" in response to the protests. The task force will also make recommendations on how to improve the university's response to future protests.
