Heather Mack, Suitcase Killer, Sentenced for Murdering Mother in Bali
Chicago Woman Imprisoned for Role in Gruesome Crime
Suitcase killer Heather Mack, born in October 1995, was recently sentenced in Illinois for her role in the 2014 murder of her mother, Sheila von Wiese, while on vacation in Bali, Indonesia. Mack was 18 years old at the time of the crime and is now serving a 10-year prison sentence.
Mack pleaded guilty to helping her boyfriend, Tommy Schaefer, kill her mother. Schaefer was convicted of murder and sentenced to death. The couple was on a luxury vacation in Bali when they killed von Wiese and stuffed her body in a suitcase. They then tried to flee the country but were arrested at the airport.
Mack's case has been closely followed by the media due to its gruesome nature and the fact that she is the daughter of a wealthy American family. Her father, James Mack, is a former Chicago police officer and businessman. Her mother, Sheila von Wiese, was a socialite and philanthropist.
The trial was also notable for Mack's unusual behavior. She often appeared disoriented and confused during the proceedings. At one point, she even laughed during the testimony of her mother's murder. Mack's attorneys argued that she was suffering from mental health issues at the time of the crime, but the jury ultimately rejected that defense.
